My New Favorite Thing: Custom-Made Dresses from Mignonette
May 30, 2008 posted by sasha

Last Sunday at the Capsule Street Design Festival in Hayes Valley, I made the find of the century, or the decade, or the year, at the very least.

I am in love with Migonette, a line of dresses that you can get CUSTOM-MADE for your body's measurements at prices that are no more expensive than what you would find at Zara--and cheaper than Anthropologie. It's couture for the masses, "handmade with love. . . "

Mignonette ("cute girl" in French) will even host a dress party for you and your friends. You choose the design, the material, and you get measured. Weeks later she'll deliver a dress to your door.

Behold her lovely designs. . .

I'm getting this dress made to wear to a Sex and the City party that I'm hosting. Love, love, love.

Photos from the GLAM-orous Style Mob Spring Mix Party!
April 25, 2008 posted by sasha

Where: Ambassador Lounge, a swank, vintage-style lounge in downtown San Francisco
When: Thursday, April 24
Crowded? Yes! The party was already at capacity with 500 people by 7 pm.

The crowd? A unique mix of bloggers, venture capitalists, fashion lovers, independent designers, and StyleMob members--all there to celebrate Glam's acquisition of StyleMob, a street fashion community where members upload outfits and vote on the best looks of the day.

The vibe: fashionable but friendly.

Beverage of choice: A Glamtini, VeeV Vodka, Fresh Pomegranate Juice, Cranberry Juice served UP with a twist

The fashion show: Unconventional and fun. StyleMob is all about fashion democracy. Accordingly, the Spring Mix fashion show featured models of all styles and body types. Their common denominator‹creativity. Patrick Koppula, the CEO of ffwd, walked the catwalk in a shirt that he designed and had made in India. Rachel Green, a San Francisco State student, wore an Anna Sui blouse with a vintage locket necklace with black skinny jeans. Nicole Renee Barnes, a marketing manager for a mobile technology company, wore a silver dress designed by Kara Janx, previously of Project Runway, and Christian Louboutin leopard-print heels.

Anyone famous stop by? Nope, but lots of reporters from the LA Times, NY Times, Financial Ttimes, as well as bloggers from VentureBeat, TechCrunch, and Mashable.

Thanks for all your support and for coming out and partying with us!

Bad Unkl Sista
February 10, 2008 posted by dana

Whoa. Last night I attended the "Eternal Spring 08" Fashion Show and Performance Bazaar at SOMARTS Bay Gallery and Theatre. While most of the fashion was geared towards a Burning Man crowd, the majority of it was extremely accessible for everyday wear. Except Bad Unkl Sista's designs. The next time you see this woman's name on a poster go to the show. The runway showcased a mass of gyrating purple worms, circus performer / earth mother goddesses and a mannequin hand costume that gave me the creeps. At the center of the performance of a dozen or so wiggling creatures, the designer, dressed in all black like a Noh theater performer drags a woman in pain across the stage. All of the pieces were made form recyclable material and the idea was to convey a post-apocalyptic aftermath with insects inheriting the earth. After two glasses of wine I looked over at my boyfriend and I'm pretty sure I saw confused terror in his eyes. Bravo! I'd say it's a job well done.

Interview with I See France co-founder Brandie Heinel
February 04, 2008 posted by dana

StyleMob had a chance to meet up with Brandie Heinel, co-founder of San Francisco cute underthing company, I See France. Check out what Brandie has to say about life as a full-time style maker.

1. Tell us about you. How did you come up with the idea for I See France?
We started all the way back in 2002. The goal was to create a line of underwear products that women could feel good about wearing. We wanted to use designs from people with names – not faceless corporate cogs. We chose the American Apparel line of intimates as the canvas for the designs because of their fair labor practices. When we began, we worked very closely with Jeffrey Kalmikoff and the guys over at Threadless. They were very good to us in helping us get started and offering tips – telling us what had worked and failed for them. Our site launched in January of 2003 and we’ve been kicking along ever since!

2. Had you always designed undies or have you worked on other fashion-related projects?
I view getting dressed every morning as a bit of a fashion project! So I suppose yes!
But seriously, I've always been very fashion aware, but this is my first professional fashion project

3. Who are your style icons and why?
I suppose the street is my fashion icon. It's really interesting to see how styles change from city to city and season to season. I travel a fair amount and move around a lot, my favorite thing to do in a new city is just sit and watch people walk by. That's my inspiration, people on the street.

4. Favorite item of clothing and why?
Next to my ISF undies I would have to say my black boots. I can wear them with jeans, a dress, they can go from sexy to casual in a second. They're the perfect compliment to just about anything.

5. I noticed that you have a bunch of designers on your label, what is your criteria for working with a designer?
We mainly look for someone that inspires us, someone who is kind, someone that we can envision working with on a friendly level. We really look for amazing people who happen to do amazing designs.

6. Who are Raviolli and Frog?
Ravioli and Frog are the resident ISF mascots. Ravioli is Brookes little fuzzy puppy while Frogger is my little one. We're both a tad animal crazy and they help to not only get us out of the house for walks but also inspire us to make new cute underthings!

7. What makes you get up in the morning?
Normally a big wet slobbery kiss from my dog Frog, after that I'd say it would have to be the thought of printing more cute underthings!

8. What is your advice for our community?
Make sure you wear cute panties - you don't want to turn out like Britney.

Contest Clarification: Show us YOU
January 28, 2008 posted by sasha

Hey StyleMobbers. . . There are MANY awesome entries being submitted to the current contest, Made It Myself. I'm continually astounded by this community's creativity.

A fair number of entries, though, are being submitted without their creators wearing the created piece. The contest rules state that they should be modeled by the person wearing them, so we're going to stick with that rule. We're not going to take them down but they won't be able to win.

If you're one of those people please resubmit your entry with you wearing your stuff, and if you need to, show us a detail view of your creation so we can see it up close and personal too. Sometimes we need to see the detail if it's a piece of jewelry.

Sorry for the confusion if you didn't see this detail in the rules. Please keep rocking on and submitting your stuff. You are amazing!!!!!

P.S. Also some users were confused about friends' votes not showing up. Your friends need to be registered as members to vote in a contest. If it didn't work the first time, please ask friends to register and then vote for you. . .

The Clothing Swap
January 16, 2008 posted by dana

This weekend I'm going to a clothing swap at SF's CELLspace (my fave art co-op) where over a hundred women of varying sizes and shapes will fire themselves up in a fashion finding frenzy. There are 3 great things about swaps:
1. Socializing: You can bond over grotesque fashion trends
2. Reusing: You don't take up space in your closet or the landfill
3. Recycling: You get to make things pretty via silkscreening, sewing or bedazzling

If you can't make the SF swap, consider holding your own clothing swap with friends to revitalize your wardrobe. If you don't find something you can wear off the hanger, you can always cut sweater sleeves into cute fingerless gloves or leg warmers. Plus you can enter our latest DIY contest and win cool prizes from Etsy.

Contest: Body & Soul
January 14, 2008 posted by dana

If you haven't checked out the contest page, you're missing out. It appears that "What Fashion Needs in 2008" is what's also good for the body and soul.

First place winner Caroline's entry "2008 needs girls who aren't a 00 in magazines" addresses the issue of healthy body image and an expansion in definitions of beauty.

Meanwhile, second place winner, Emery Jo's entry Originality 2008 speaks of self expression and unexpected fashion pairings. Congratulations Caroline and Emery Jo!!! Your thoughtful entries keep people like me from being terrified in what can often feel like a forest of colorful stick bugs.

November Stylepoints Prizes: Vintage-Inspired Jewelry and Books
November 09, 2007 posted by sasha

Our stylepoints raffle continues this month. Collect 1000 stylepoints between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30 and you will be eligible for our monthly raffle. There will be five winners again, this month, randomly chosen from the 1000+ club. A thousand may sound like a lot, but those points rack up quickly. I include a sneaky tip for how to collect more at the bottom of this post.

The five prizes will be:

* Two $25 gift certificates for crazy-cool handmade jewelry donated by Paraphernalia.

She calls them "beauteous and wholesome accroutements for both Ladies and Gentlemen, inspired by both vintage illustrations and 19th century magicians." Please check out her Etsy shop to see the pieces you can choose from. Here are a couple before you wander over there.

* Three signed copies of my new book, To-Do List: From Buying Milk to Finding a Soul Mate, What Our Lists Reveal About Us. To-Do List is a collection of 100 real, handwritten lists and the stories behind them. Watch the video trailer on YouTube and learn more about the project on my blog
todolistblog.com!

Here's another stylepoints tip, for the savvy. Proclaim yourself as a StyleMobber by posting a badge on your blog, MySpace, Facebook. LiveJournal, or other page. You'll get ten percent of all the points earned by people who click through and join.

Secrets of Stylepoints
November 02, 2007 posted by sasha

We'll be announcing the prizes for November's stylepoints raffle Monday (collect 1,000 points between now and Nov. 30 and you'll qualify).

In the meantime, I thought I would share a tip for collecting more points!

So . . . psssst! When you embed your StyleMob looks on other social networks, you collect stylepoints. Whenever someone clicks through and joins, you get ten percent of all the points they earn. So you can really rack up points this way--and at the same time get more friends to vote and give feedback on your looks.

Here's how you embed a look:

1. Look below your submitted looks for icons from your fave social networks
2. Choose one (blogger, myspace, facebook, etc.)
3. Enter your username and password (we don't share or store this info, so no fears there)
4. Click go, and presto, your look will embed automatically and appear on your other pages. Again, anyone who clicks through and joins will help fuel your points!

Introducing the StyleSpotters
October 23, 2007 posted by sasha

Today we're introducing a very cool new feature on StyleMob . . .

A select group of 21 StyleMobbers who applied have been granted "StyleSpotting" powers. StyleSpotters roam the streets, their schools, and their workplace to find people with inspiring, outrageous, interesting style--and to take pictures to share with you.

Their pictures have a special "StyleSpotter" icon next to the title and they have a "StyleSpotter" icon on their pages. We've given them cards to hand to people whose photos they snap and a badge to show their subjects that they are not just strangers with a camera--they're StyleSpotters!

We're starting out small for now with this "pilot program." In the future, we want to make StyleSpotting powers available to a lot more StyleMobbers, so if you are interested, stay tuned and let us know. We'll let you know when we're ready to expand. And watch out, you could be StyleSpotted by someone soon.

Slideshow Widget, Oh My
October 15, 2007 posted by sasha

Some questions on the forums made me realize that everyone might not realize this nifty widget is available. . .so just thought I would clarify: You can post a slideshow widget of your StyleMob looks. When you lick "grab code," it makes it easy to put the slideshow on your MySpace, Facebook, LiveJournal, or blog. So turn some heads elsewhere with your StyleMob looks.

Plus, people who click through will automatically be your friends, and you'll get points--for every ten points a friend receives, you collect one.

Stylepoints Prizes, Oooh La La
October 08, 2007 posted by sasha

Attention StyleMobbers! We're changing up the stylepoints raffle this month . . . here's how it works:

Every month everyone who collects at least 1,000 stylepoints (during that month) will be entered into a raffle to win prizes. Look on your profile page and you can see how many of your points are eligible each month. If you're reaching toward a 1,000, then stylemob more and you'll be in the pool.

The raffle will be on the last day of every month and five winners will get to choose prizes from a page of stylepoints prizes. (We'll be adding this page very soon, so stay tuned.)

You can get stylepoints for everything from uploading pictures to commenting, But the best way to collect points is to invite friends. For every ten points a friend earns, you get one point. So spread the word about StyleMob to your friends and collect stylepoints while you are sleeping!

October's prizes will be announced on Friday.

Our New Blog!
October 08, 2007 posted by sasha

Heya. . .

I'm very happy to announce that we now have an official StyleMob blog. We've moved posts from "What's New" on the forums to here, and we'll keep sharing announcements about contests, media attention, new features, and other cool stuff here. So please check back and share your feedback in the comments. We're a small team but we do our best to put your ideas on our to-do lists!

This blog will also be a place to share observations about clothing, style, and how it intersects with our daily lives. . . Stay tuned for posts on how clothing and style expresses who we are. And for guest posts from some of our favorite fashion bloggers.

P.S. Adam and I, the co-founders of the site, are talking to investors to raise money for StyleMob. We met with two investors today and before leaving the office took pictures of our "venture capital outfits." Here's mine. If you have any fashion advice that will make us a slam dunk for investors (I don't know what that would be) let us know!

Find Your Friends
October 08, 2007 posted by sasha

Hey! We're excited about a new feature that makes it really easy for you to find friends who are already on StyleMob and add them and to invite friends who aren't on . . . yet.

Go to Find Friends and check out your list of contacts on MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, or AOL. You can add friends and/or invite them easy as pie. (Or click.)

Remember, your stylepoints grow when you invite too. For every ten points a friend you invite earns, you get one point.

Join Our Street Team!
October 01, 2007 posted by GnarlyGirl

StyleMob.com is seeking interns - Street Team Members and Style Spotters!!

We are currently seeking interns worldwide to represent us in their community in the form of Street Team Members and Style Spotters.

What is a Street Team Member?

Street Team Members network with style-conscious people, designers & fashion merchants to spread the word about StyleMob. Your main mission is to promote StyleMob at your school, your workplace and your community in general, and to have fun while you do it.

As a Street Team Member, you can:

* Promote the site online via comments, bulletins, blogs, etc.
* Promote offline via handing out postcards and putting up posters
* Throw StyleMob Dress-Up Parties with Best Dressed contests. Pick a theme (be creative!), photograph the outfits people wear and post them on the site to be voted on. We’ll give you a StyleMob t-shirt to wear at your event, posters to publicize it, and we’ll send a prize to the winner of your contest.

* Recruit other fashionable members of your community to further promote StyleMob in their network of friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances.

Street Team Leaders are also encouraged to act as Style Spotters and fashion editors by providing us with information about any local designers, businesses or fashion-lovers that we should spotlight as MobStars of the Day.

What are the benefits of being a Street Team Member?

Street Team Members receive a StyleMob t-shirt and badge, postcards to hand out, and posters to hang up where you see fit. You will also receive credit as an intern for StyleMob if you attend a school that allows credit for internships. In addition, you will receive Stylepoints, which we soon want to make redeemable for stylish prizes.

What is a Style Spotter?

Style Spotters take photos of stylish people or items they see in everyday life, and post them up on the website in order to provide fashion inspiration to the masses, as well as style rating material. Style Spotters take down information about the look or item they’ve photographed via a handy questionnaire form we have composed, and give their photo subjects a StyleMob postcard so the subject can see their photograph online and potentially become a member of the site.

What are the benefits of being a Style Spotter?

Style Spotters receive a StyleMob t-shirt and press badge so people know you’re legit, and postcards to hand out while you’re style spotting. You will receive credit as an intern for StyleMob if you attend a school that allows credit for internships. In addition, you will receive Stylepoints, which we soon want to make redeemable for stylish prizes.

Go on and give us a shout if you are interested in this fun opportunity! To apply, email mia@stylemob.com with your username and a note about why you would like to become a Style Spotter or Street Team Leader and what assets you feel you can bring to the site.

Look Out New York! StyleMob Rocks the NY Daily News
August 09, 2007 posted by sasha

Heyas,

Some very fun and exciting things are happening now that we are public. The editors at the New York Daily News were so in love with the StyleMob community that today they published an awesome three-page fashion spread of 16 New Yorkers on StyleMob. Check it out here and here and below!

IWho knows, other papers may follow suit. You never know, you could be featured next as a style star in your town. In fact, if you live in the Bay Area, be on the lookout for the Sunday Chronicle. There will be a story about StyleMob and photos from members in the cover of the Chronicle Sunday Styles section.
